The Sweet Benefits of Honey

Honey has been used from the times of ancient Egypt, at the time honey is the only source for sweetener used in food and drinks, unlike us today who uses different kind of source used as sweetener. Some Egyptian rituals like an offering to the Gods, and mummifying the dead have already used the benefits of honey. Honey had also been used to help curing diseases like used for antiseptic, refresh the skin, helping our digestive system, and also believed as a cure to fever.

Those are what the ancient Egyptian believed and have not been proved scientifically. But what exactly are the benefits of honey? Here are some of the sweet benefits of honey:

  1. Cure for heart disease
    The sugar and mineral in the honey function as tonicum for the heart. The heart muscles which work endlessly every day need glucose as the source of energy. Consuming honey 70 gr (2.6 ounces) per day for 1-2 months could make the deceased feel better and a better blood circulation.
  2. Cure for Gastric and digestive system problems
    The mineral contents of honey could decrease the acidic level of the stomach and help stop the bleeding of the stomach. The darker the honey the more minerals it contains and higher alkaline level. The alkaline level is useful to neutralize the acidic level of the stomach.
  3. Help to increase our stamina
    Honey is mainly composed of Glucose. Glucose fuels the body. If you’re exhausted after doing your daily activities consuming honey would help you to get back in shape.
  4. Cure for arthritis disease
    Studies at Copenhagen University proves that 1 tablespoon of honey mixed with 7 teaspoon of cinnamon given to arthritic patients before breakfast continuously for a week help to reduce the pain and symptoms of the disease for 73 out of 200 patients. People with arthritic disease can use it to help reducing the pain.
  5. Honey as a sex nutrition
    The Greeks have been using honey to improve the male cement quality. Two tablespoon of honey before bed could help men’s fertility. Japanese, Chinese and other East Asian woman have already discovered that a mix of honey and cinnamon helps to strengthen their vagina.
  6. Help reducing cavities
    In 2001, Prof. Peter C Molan, Bsc, Ph.D a scientist from University of Waikato, New Zealand discovered that honey helps reduce the cavities forming and the amount of acid generated within the mouth. He believes the enzymes in the honey help to form Hydrogen Peroxides that are effective against cavities. It’s also helps to fight the pathogens within the mouth and helps avoiding cold sore and other mouth related disease.
  7. Natural antiseptic
    The high amount of sugar within the honey helps to slow the growth of bacteria. Its acidic nature helps in killing the pathogens. According to Prof. Peter C Molan, Bsc, Ph.D the acidic level of honey is about 3.2 – 4.5 ph, enough to keep away the pathogens.
  8. Helps to remove acne
    Because honey act as a natural antiseptic, it can be used to remove acne. How to do it? First wash your face, then smear the face with a mix of 3 tablespoon honey and 1 teaspoon of cinnamon before you go to bed. The next day wash your face with warm water. Repeat for 2 weeks.
  9. Helps to maintain your skin beauty
    Honey has some minerals and substance that helps your healthy skin. The vitamin C found in honey helps to ward off the free radicals and stimulate the forming collagen. Collagen is an important substance for healthy skin.

Some Warning!
Honey shouldn’t be given to infants under one year, because honey could carry Clostridium Botulinum spore that triggers botulism which is a heavy food poisoning. Because infants have a weak digestive system the botulinum spore within the honey would remain active in the infant’s intestines and it can produce toxin while still in the intestines.
Botulism symptoms in infants are constipation, cries a lot, hard to swallow, low consciousness, and dizzy.
